My first Blog

Updated: Jan 29

I remember first seeing this video some years back. I often think about his journey and how similar his story is to mine, how our stories are not so different from millions of others. Although my game of choice used to be blackjack, watching this I can remember times of desperation. I've had plenty of victories that I was proud of, and some moments that I wish I could forget. I never won anything close to what the MIT Blackjack team did, but going into a casino with $40 and turning it into $1,000 or $1,500 can make a person feel like $100 million is possible.

I never came to the conclusion that I'm an addict, although I will readily admit I have impulse control issues. Gambling companies know how to feed into that hope and excitement, using tactics that keep players engaged and coming back for more. They don’t just target adults—they also appeal to younger generations through flashy apps and online platforms that make gambling seem like just another game. With the rise of online casinos and sports betting, even children are being exposed to this world at an alarming rate.

Homelessness seems like it would be the extreme end of gambling addiction. The truth is, something bigger is going on. People are gravitating toward gambling, drugs, or other escapes to numb the grim reality of everyday life. This year, I’m choosing to bet wise. I’m going to bet on myself. Please share your thoughts.
